Class with Kay
& Iraqi Dance Partywith Uza

Delve deeper into the music and ‘folklore’ culture of Khaliji women! Learn a traditional folk song – melody, lyrics and rhythm including handclaps. Women’s bands in the Gulf region sing for weddings and other celebratory occasions. Requirements – a willingness to sing and/or play hand percussion. If you want to drum, bring a ‘frame drum’, or Darbukah (Dumbeck) – goblet drum.
THEN...stick around and enjoy some Iraqi party music and a performance from Uza!!

After learning step patterns of traditional women’s social dances found in Saudi Arabia, and the “Gulf”, the class will experience how women in the Gulf traditionally perform these steps – as a group, in traditional performances. Participants will come away with not only a new vocabulary of steps and movements, but a deeper awareness of their cultural and performance context.

This will be an open level workshop and lecture in the popular modern Iraqi dance style known as “Raqs El Kawliya.” The lecture will feature an exclusive video presentation, which will review the past fifty years of the dance, as well as cover research methods and conflicting arguments, while touching on different areas of music and dance throughout Iraq. We will drill the basics, learn new vocabulary and ways to expand on these steps, and practice our pacing and intuition. We will also talk about daggers, their use, and cover basic dagger technique. Then finally rounding off with fun combinations that help you develop your own vocabulary.

Show will feature performances from Uza Mitra, Kay Hardy-Campbell and local guest musicians Amine Amich and Samer , along with host Amani jabril and guest dancers!
